The Chhattisgarh unit of the Congress party is likely to announce names of its official candidates for Mayoral, Councillor and Nagar Palika President’s post for civic bodies’ polls on Friday.
Voting for the civic bodies’ polls is scheduled in two phases i.e. December 29 and 31, this year while the process of filing nomination has already been started. The Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CGPCC) has called a meeting of its State Election Recommendation Committee comprising of senior party leaders including Motilal Vora, Mohsina Kidwai, Bhakta Charandas, Ajit Jogi, Bhupesh Baghel and TS Singhdeo to release final list of the candidates.
Dr Charandas Mahant, Tamradhwaj Sahu, Mohammad Akbar, Pushpadevi Singh, PR Khunte and lakheswar Baghel will also participate as the Committee’s members in the meeting to be held here in Congress Bhawan from 10.30 am. The 12-member committee will also have discussion with its candidates for lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha polls along with the In-charge of the city and district wing while finalizing the names of suitable candidates for the civic bodies’ polls in their respective area.
“This time, the candidate selection process is going to be tougher as a number of people have claimed their candidature before the party on various posts. For only Mayor post of Raipur, the party has received 22 applications” said CGPCC spokesperson, Shushil Anand Shukla.
Citing reasons behind receiving such number of applications, Shukla said “Congress has been fighting against injustice done by the BJP-led state government to the people. The ruling government has lost its credibility due to dilapidated health, sanitation and policing system, increasing Naxal activities and paddy procurement policy while Congress has raised people-centric issues from road to the parliament”.
