The Congress in Chhattisgarh on Friday demanded a White Paper on Covid deaths in country following a World Health Organization (WHO) claim that over 47 lakh people died in India.
PCC chief Mohan Markam said in a statement that the figures quoted by WHO were a whopping 10 times more than the Union government’s figure of 4.80 lakh.
The WHO claims that the death toll in India was the largest in the entire world and this shows what alarming proportions the pandemic had taken in the country, the Congress leader said.
"We can’t take lightly the figures of WHO," he said.
Publicity is the main work of the Modi government and instead of accepting its failure, it pasted big posters of vaccination drive with the Prime Minister’s photograph, he said.
The wrong figures provided by the Modi government might be because it doesn’t want to provide relief to the families of the Covid deceased in the form of ex gratia, he said.
