Cong calls for State-wide bandh on Jan 29

The Chhattisgarh unit of the Congress party has called for a state-wide ‘bandh’ on January 29 to protest  State government’s reported decision to increase property tax by 50 per cent.

The BJP government in the State has forced property tax on the urban population of the State. Prior to imposing of tax, no public elected representative body was consulted; the objections from the general public were also not heard and the decision to increase tax was announced, Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CGPCC) President Bhupesh Baghel said. He was addressing a press conference here at party’s State headquarters 'Congress Bhawan' on Sunday.

“The Congress party strongly condemns this tax hike and has called for state-wide bandh on January 29,” he said. Baghel alleged that the autonomy of elected institutions are being trampled and the public representatives from civic bodies have decided to oppose this decision.

Congress legislature Party (ClP) leader TS Singhdeo while opposing the hike said that this is total injustice and this should be opposed.

Residents of the State have been incensed by the decision. The BJP government is trying to avenge its defeat in civic body polls, he alleged. We will raise the issue in the coming budget session, the ClP said.
