The Congress party’s City Wing on Monday staged a demonstration at the district collector’s office here against the ongoing ration card verification and cancellation drive.

A large number of people led by Raipur City District Committee’s President, Vikas Upadhyay submitted a memorandum to the district collector Thakur Ram Singh during his weekly public hearing held at the Collectorate here.

Upadhyay accused the officials concerned of overlooking the rules in carrying out the card verification at ward 18 (Sant Ramdas ward) and ward 19 (Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Ward) and displaying negligence in carrying out the work. He alleged that cancellation of ration cards of widows, handicapped, destitute and old age people have taken place without valid reasons.

Urging the district collector for his intervention to dispose their complaints, the protesting people also demanded to increase time limit of the ongoing ration card verification work. Upadhyay claimed that before the Assembly polls, the ruling BJP Government prepared ration card of thousands of people by overlooking the norms only to garner their support and after winning, they are cancelling the ration cards in the name of rules.
