The Carbon Monoxide Monitoring and Safety System with latest technology features installed in Coke Oven Battery-10 was inaugurated in the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) by senior management of the mega public sector steel unit here.
The facility was inaugurated by YK Degan, ED (W) in presence of T Pandiaraja, GM (Safety), PR Deshmukh, GM(CO&CCD), and l Umakanth, GM (I&A), a BSP press released issued here on Monday stated. The features and capability of gas detection system was explained by Rajnish Jain, Senior Manager(Inst.)
The mixed gas consisting of more than 90 per cent BF gas is used as fuel in heating process of coke oven battery.The blast furnace gas contains odour less carbon mono-oxide gas. Operators working in tunnel of coke oven batteries likely to be exposed to hazardous condition if gas leakages occur in tunnel area of coke oven batteries, it stated.
learning from the incidence of pump house-2 last year, BSP is procuring large number of CO sensors and installing them at all gas leakage areas. One such system is installed in tunnel of COB-10. This system detects presence of carbon monoxide gas in 16 different locations of gas risk zones and alerts the person working in the area by an audio and visual alarm. The capability of the system also includes recording of all the data of last three months. This data can be used for further analysis and improvement.
Speaking on the occasion, Degan, stressed on giving utmost importance to safety and maximising use of latest technology to plants advantage and safety of people. l Umakant informed that the gas detection system in COB-10 has been installed as pilot project, procurement of 216 detector with other auxiliaries is under process and will be soon installed all over the plant.
The Project was completed under the guidance of GP Singh, DGM (CO&CCD) & SP-III. During the inauguration, P Jayaraj, DGMI/c(I&W), YS Gupta, DGM(INCOS), JK Dey, DGM(COCCD), RB Pandey, DGM(safety), and other senior officers and workers of COCCD, safety and instrumentation department were present.
