Following the deadly Naxal attack in neighbouring Maharashtra that  killed 16 security personnel, a high alert has been sounded in Maoist-affected districts of Chhattisgarh, Director General of Police D.M. Awasthi said on Wednesday.

“Security has been beefed up since afternoon in the areas close to Gadhchiroli in Maharashtra and other Maoist-affected districts in the state”, the DGP said.

“All range inspector generals have been directed to intensify vigil to prevent the ultras from entering the state”, the officer added.

“Soon I am going to conduct security meetings in Naxal infested districts of Bastar to discuss strategies we could adopt to deal with the current situation”, the DGP further said.

In neighbouring Gadhchiroli district of Maharashtra 16 Jawans, including a driver, were killed in an IED blast triggered by the Maoists. The security personnel were cordoning off a forest patch in a bus when the incident took place. The C-60 COPS came in contact with a pressure improvised explosive device (IED), planted by Maoists beneath the road they were passing by.
