Despite a major slowdown in economy that has killed many jobs, Chhattisgarh brought down its unemployment rate to 2 percent in September, which is much lower than the national average of 6.8 percent.

The unemployment rate was 7.9 percent in urban areas and 6.3 percent in rural areas in the country. According to the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) on October 16, the unemployment rate in Assam is 1.2 percent followed by Chhattisgarh (2 percent).

The unemployment rate in Rajasthan is 15.3 percent, 12.2 percent in Delhi, 11.9 percent in Bihar, 19.1 percent in Haryana, 9.6 percent in Punjab, 4.5 percent in Maharashtra, 9.3 percent in West Bengal, 4.2 percent in Uttar Pradesh, 8.2 percent in Jharkhand and 2.1 percent in Odisha.

An official statement credited the situation in Chhattisgarh to decisions taken by Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel's government which boosted agricultural and industrial activities, pushing up employment opportunities in the state and reducing it to the lowest point.

Previously, the unemployment rate had come down from 14.4 percent in June to 9 percent in July. Decisions taken by the government kept people in the state connected with economic activities even amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Industrial activities commenced in Chhattisgarh in the last week of April. Presently, work has started at almost 100 percent industries while taking preventive measures against corona. With the aid of good monsoon, the agricultural activities have increased in the state.
