Chhattisgarh doesn't need 'direct cash transfer' for PDS, Raman writes to PM

Chief Minister Raman Singh has said that he had shot off a missive to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that Chhattisgarh does not need the ‘direct cash transfer’ system for its Public Distribution System.

‘The 42 lakh poor people of Chhattisgarh require cheap food grains, gram and free supply of salt. Just by depositing barely `600 in the beneficiary’s account does not guarantee cheap ration for the poor,’ Singh said while addressing a massive gathering of people at the public meeting held during his Vikas Yatra in the district headquarters on Friday.

He said that the ‘direct cash transfer’ may run for any other scheme but would certainly not be practicable in implementing it for the Public Distribution System (PDS). later ,CM also addressed public meetings at Churia and Dongargarh and directly met the people.

When Singh asked the people in Dongargarh to express their opinion on the ‘direct cash transfer’ in the PDS system proposed by the Centre, the people rejected it right away while displaying support for the scheme of distribution of cheap food grains and free salt under the PDS system launched by the  Government. The CM also reiterated the fact that the credit of formulating the first food security law in the country goes to Chhattisgarh.
