Central Government is mulling over a plan to move Single Permanent Tribunal bill in the upcoming monsoon session of the Parliament to resolve inter-State river water disputes, said Union Minister of State for Water resources, Arjun Meghwal here on Sunday.
Meghwal made the comment while replying to a query by mediapersons at Swami Vivekanand Airport on Sunday morning about the persisting dispute of sharing of Mahanadi river water between the States of Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
The minister remarked that all the disputes regarding inter-state river water sharing between different states would get resolved in the single tribunal.
“The union Government has taken the matter seriously and is working in a direction to find out a permanent solution”, he replied when asked about long running dispute between Chhattisgarh and Odisha states over Mahanadi river.
Mahanadi which is described as lifeline river for Chhattisgarh, originates from Sihawa in Dhamtari district and it drains an area of around 141,600 square kilometres and has a total course of 858 kilometres.
Meghwal said the Union Minister for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari had already taken some steps and had stressed on holding meetings of various states to find a permanent solution to interstate river water sharing disputes.
“Now our Government is taking a step forward and is going to move a bill in the monsoon session of the parliament for formation of a single tribunal so that all the water sharing disputes between various states are being sorted out by a single body”, he informed.
