In 74 districts of the country, water has reached every home. But this work has not picked up in Chhattisgarh as it should have, Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said on Saturday.
Availability of water has reduced due to increasing population, he said, adding that by 2024, no woman should be forced to carry water on her head.
Chhattisgarh holds 30th position in implementing Jal Jeevan Mission, Shekhawat told the media during a day's visit to Raipur.
He said the State Government could not spend the allocation of Rs 1,900 crore under the scheme. Only Rs 400 crores have been utilised. It reflects the slow pace of work. Faster and more work has to be done, he remarked.
But the Minister appreciated the steps by the Chief Minister through the ‘Narva Scheme’ for conservation, harvest and storage of water and ground water recharging. There has been a reduction in deaths related to water in the State.
