'CBI should probe Rs14-cr paddy scam'

To benefit some rice millers and transporters, paddy stocks to the tune of around Rs 14 crore were illegally transported to rice mills from two procurement centers of Balodabazaar-Bhatapara district, alleged Congress leader and former Minister Mohammed Akbar on Sunday.

Without Release Orders (ROs) around 16,76,61 gunny bags containing paddy weighing (around 88707 quintals ) were illegally transported to some rice millers, alleged Akbar in a statement issued here.

For impartial investigation into the case, involving corruption to the tune of around Rs 14 crore, the same should be investigated by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Akbar said.

Deliberate attempt is being made to hush up the entire corruption, and for this, names of rice millers and transporters involved in illegal transportation of paddy were not mentioned in a letter recently dispatched to Bhatapara Station House Officer (SHO) by concerned authority seeking FIR in this connection, he charged.

It may be recalled that the Congress leader had recently raised issue of an embezzlement to the tune of over Rs 15 crore which allegedly took place in paddy procurement centres of Devri and Suma in Bhatapara in the month of July this year.

According to Akbar, around 14,431,52 quintal paddy was procured in Aalesur and Khamariya procurement center, of which 88,707 quintal paddy was found to be missing following which officials of MARKFED wrote a letter to SHO Bhatapara to register a case in this connection but didn’t mention names of rice millers and transporters, he alleged.
