The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Thursday registered its protest against the inclusion of food items of daily use in the purview of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Addressing the media, CAIT National President B.C. Bhartia, General Secretaries Praveen Khandelwal and Sumit Agrawal and Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industries President Amar Parwani jointly said a memorandum has been submitted to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman seeking its rollback.
It was pointed out that any kind of trade-marked products mainly curd, butter, lassi, wheat flour, flattened rice, jaggery and other items of daily use cannot be justified at any level.
As the common man is facing the brunt of inflation, GST on daily use items will send the prices spiraling.
The 5 percent GST levied will be applicable from July 18.
The CAIT National President said only 15 percent of the population in the country used big brand goods. The remaining population consumed products without a brand or trademark. Bringing these items in the tax slab of GST was an unjust step.
