An Assistant Commandant of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) in Raigarh district was arrested on Saturday on charges of running over a 12-year-old boy.

Kunjram Chauhan of the CAF’s 6th Battalion was later released on bail, Raigarh Additional Superintendent of Police Lakhan Pawar Patle said.

On November 20, Lavya Modi, a Class 7 student of Jindal School, was going to a stadium on his bicycle when Chauhan’s vehicle ran over him. The vehicle has been confiscated.

The victim was the only child of Income Tax advocate Amit Modi, Patel said, adding that Chauhan himself was driving recklessly.

He said that Omprakash Mishra (27), a driver of another car, had stopped at a roadside garage and had negligently opened the car door, causing the boy to fall from his cycle. Chauhan's vehicle then crushed him to death.

The police had arrested Mishra on November 21 and released him on bail.
