A joint team of the Women and Child Development Department and police stopped a child marriage in Chhattisgarh's Bemetera district on Tuesday.

On ‘Akshay Tritiya’, child marriages are organized, especially in rural areas of Chhattisgarh.

The state administration had issued directives to all district Collectors to take necessary action if any child marriage was reported, an official communication said on Tuesday.

On receipt of information regarding a child marriage, the two teams reached village Dhokla from where the marriage procession of the groom was to reach village Motimpur, the village of the bride in Nawagarh block.

The officials intervened and made the families understand that marrying off minor children was illegal. It will invite legal action under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. The families agreed that both will be married after they reach the legally marriageable age.
