C’garh Assembly pays tributes to former members

Chhattisgarh Assembly was adjourned for the day on Friday after obituary references were made to three politicians who died recently.

The House also observed two-minute silence to pay homage to the deceased—former MLA of undivided Madhya Pradesh Santosh Kumar Agrawal, former legislator Balram Singh Thakur and Bhima Mandavi, who was the member of the current assembly.

Initiating the obituary references on the first day of the Monsoon Session of the Assembly, leader of the House and Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel paid rich tribute to late leaders.

He said late Santosh Agrawal was a humble and dedicated social worker while Mandavi could rise from a village secretary to MLA due to his fighting spirit to tackle all odds.

In the demise of Mandavi, a young emerging tribal public representative was lost in a Naxal attack, the CM said.

Paying homage to Thakur, he said the former lawmaker was an outspoken, simple and amiable person from whom he had received blessings like a son.

Thakur also rose from being a junior functionary to two times Mayor of Bilaspur and then went on to become two times MLA. His religious inclination led to development of Ratanpur Mahamaya temple.

Leader of the Opposition Dharamlal Kaushik said former MLA from Mahasamund, Santosh Agarwal earned a nickname ‘Dau’ due to his work.

He described Mandavi as a young dynamic tribal leader who stood for democracy and tribal rights in core Naxal-hit area. He had contributed in different capacities. There is need to support his family after his demise, he added.

Former chief ministers Ajit Jogi and Raman Singh and other opposition and treasury members paid rich tributes to the departed leaders.

Members also paid reverence to late Bindeshwari Devi, mother of Chief Minister, who had passed away recently.

The House will meet again on Monday (July 15).
