Chhattisgarh’s first automated fitness testing centre has been established in Raipur. Fitness of transport vehicles will be checked here by state-of-the-art equipment.
The establishment of the center is a major achievement in the direction of efforts being made towards reducing road accidents.
The Secretary in the Transport Department, S. Prakash, said fitness inspection done by automated machines will eliminate the need for human intervention.
Transport vehicles are required to undergo fitness inspection every two years until eight years. After that, they must undergo annual fitness inspection. This rule applies to both passenger and goods vehicles used for commercial transportation.
Additionally, if a transport vehicle over 15 years old fails the fitness test, its registration has to be terminated, he said. Transport Commissioner Dipanshu Kabra said the center will carry out a range of tests including those related to roller brake, axle load, steering gear, speedometer, speed governor, exhaust gas and headlights.
The government has also introduced a scrapping policy to boost the automobile sector. A tax rebate of up to 25 per cent will be provided when purchasing a new vehicle while scrapping an old one.
