Fugitive city-based builder Sanjay Bajpai ended almost a week of suspense about his whereabouts after surrendering before the Judicial Magistrate First Class Yogita Vinay Wasnik this morning in her court here on Thursday. He has been sent on police remand for three days, informed Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Dr lal Umed Singh.

The builder’s sudden appearance at the court of CJM has come as a surprise for the police as a massive hunt was launched to trace him with some teams sent even to other states, it was learnt.

Bajpai had been absconding after a case of fraud and cheating was registered against him in a land grabbing case pertaining to Kamal Vihar Scheme of the Raipur Development Authority (RDA) at Moudhapara and Golbazar Police Station in the city.

The ASP informed that the CJM remanded Bajpai to three days police custody on an application moved by in-charges of both Moudhapara and Golbazar police station. “However his wife Dr Sarita Bajpai who is a co-accuse in case is still on the run,” the ASP added.

Immediately after hearing about Bajpai’s arrest some of his acquaintances arrived in the court to meet him. After Bajpai’s arrival and start of the proceedings, the court reserved the order on his surrender till 2 pm. After 2 pm the court permitted the Moudhapara police to take him on remand for a period of three days and present Bajapi again in court on June 15.

Bajpai’s counsel Faizal Rizwi told media persons who had gathered in large numbers at the court that the builder was very much in Chhattisagrh and had only moved to another city for a medical treatment. Only two days before Bajpai came to know that a case had been registered against him so he arrived in the court and surrendered himself, he said.
