Continuing the legacy of previous two years, the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) team made hat-rick in Chairman’s Trophy for Young Managers (CTYM) competition as Runners-Up in the grand finale held at Management Training Institute, Ranchi on February 29, 2016.
This being third year in continuation, it was quiet tough for BSP team to make a place in the competition. The theme of the competition for the year 2015-16 was “Emerging as a Cost leader: Issues & Challenges for SAIl”, a BSP press release informed.
A total of 51 teams participated in the competition across SAIl and top seven teams qualified for final round. The Jury of the finale included Dr N Mohapatra Director (Personnel), M Ravi ED I/c(VISl) and Fr. Alexius Ekka of XISS Ranchi.
Chairman, SAIl PK Singh gave away the certificate of merit to the team of young managers from BSP comprising of Prateek Deshlahra, AM (Finance), Avilash Pansari, DM (Traffic) and Santosh Patidar, DM (Projects).
Present at the function on March 6 were members of the top management of SAIl who conveyed their best wishes.
Directors of SAIl, including BSP CEO S Chandrasekaran along with other top executives of various SAIl units also congratulated the team. Besides the cash prize the trio also won a three day visit to a foreign steel plant.
Team identified the issues and challenges in front of SAIl to emerge as a cost leader and categorised them in two main heads viz Cost Optimisation and Revenue Maximisation.
The team proposed recommendations to overcome the issues and challenges in the form of “SAIl opportunity tree model” which was highly appreciated by the jury. For optimising cost, focus was given on the roots of the tree for which sub models SOIl, MINERAl and WATER are to enhance raw material, production process and human resource, respectively.
On the similar front rising crown of the tree symbolised revenue maximisation for which focus was given on MODEX and Marketing through sub model lIGHT and ATMOSPHERE.
The team also proposed safe and ethical practices in working to strengthen the trunk of the Tree. The team appreciated the support and guidance received from the top management, HRD, their own respective departments and BSP fraternity without whom this achievement could not have materialized.
As an HRD intervention for Young Managers in SAIl, the CTYM has been designed in the form of a competition to bring out the best young Managers by providing them a platform for self-development through reading and research and the same time allowing them an opportunity to present their views before the top Management of SAIl.
This Annual event in SAIl essentially requires carrying out empirical research on a specific theme, preparing a write up and presenting a paper before a panel of Judges.
