BJP's Ambika is now Birgaon's first mayor

Published on:

Ambika Yadu of Chhattisgarh’s ruling BJP, became the first mayor of Birgaon Municipal Corporation in Raipur district as she defeated Congress nominee Sunita Dewangan by 5202 votes in maiden Birgaon polls for which results were declared on Thursday.

The victory of the BJP’s candidates is largely credited to State’s Cabinet Minister Brijmohan Agrawal who is known as an election

strategist. The BJP had assigned Agrawal the role of election in-charge for the Birgaon polls to ensure victory for the saffron party.

The election for Birgaon was held on November 19.

Though the BJP cheered the victory for the mayor post but party’s performance for Birgaon’s 40 wards was highly disappointing. The BJP won just 13 wards while the Congress bagged 20 wards and Independent candidates emerged winners in seven wards.

Congress’ defeat has been largely blamed to open factionalism within the party as certain leaders put their best to blunt Congress resurgence in the State.
