The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed the dismissal of Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by the Supreme Court seeking ballot papers be used for voting instead of EVMs .
The apex court on Thursday had dismissed a PIL seeking use of ballot papers instead of EVMs during Assembly and Lok Sabha polls.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi did not agree with the contention of the NGO ‘Nyay Bhoomi’ that EVMs are capable of being misused and they should not be used in the polls to ensure free and fair polls.
Reacting on the decision of apex court, State BJP Spokesperson Sachchidanand Upasane said, “BJP has always been in favour of the technology use in voting as it saves time and helped for increasing the voting percentage as maximum electors can register their vote in shortest period. Similarly, it is easier for counting the number of votes, which also saves the time when compared to ballot papers.”
Attacking Congress on the issue, he opined that Congress has been raising the issue on reliability of EVMs when things do not move in their favour.
To a query that Chhattisgarh unit of the Congress party has alleged that some hackers were hired by BJP from New Delhi to tamper the EVMs, Upasane said, “It is all politically motivated allegations and are baseless.”
