BJP names Dr Gambheer Singh for Marwahi by-poll

Published on:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday named Dr Gambheer Singh as its candidate for next month’s by-election from the Marwahi (ST) constituency which fell vacant following the death of Chhattisgarh's first Chief Minister Ajit Jogi in May.

The ruling Congress party has not announced the name of its candidate so far. JCC state President and ex-Marwahi legislator Amit Jogi may also stake claim on the tribal dominated seat.

Ajit Jogi won the 2018 assembly poll from Marwahi but he passed away on May 29, 2020. Marwahi seat has been a Jogi family bastion since the state's formation in 2000.

Marwahi will see a bye-election on November 3 and the votes will be counted on November 10.

The Central Election Committee of BJP chaired by party President J.P. Nadda declared the names of candidates for the upcoming Vidhan Sabha by-elections in states.

Sixteen names have been announced for five states: Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Manipur and Odisha.

In Chattisgarh, only one constituency will go to the polls.
