BJP, Congress spar over farmers

The BJP and the ruling Congress on Wednesday targeted each other over the issue of farmers in Chhattisgarh, with the opposition party announcing state-wide protests.

State BJP President Vishnudeo Sai told the media said demonstrations will be held on January 12 in each assembly constituency to highlight the demands of farmers. In the next phase on January 22, protests will be held at all district headquarters.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Dharamlal Kaushik accused the Congress government of misleading the farmers over the shortage of gunny bags by blaming the Centre.

He said the Central government had last season asked to deposit 28 lakh tonnes of rice in FCI godowns. Even after FCI extending the date by three months, the remaining 2 lakh tonnes have not been deposited till date.

He added that 33,500 applications for power connection for irrigation pumps with documents are pending as the state government has to pay around Rs 335 crores.

Countering allegations of Congress leaders, he said the BJP government in the last 15 years procured paddy for 76 days but now the actual procurement is only for 40 days.
