BJP ‘divided house’ on indirect elections: Cong

State Congress on Wednesday claimed that main opposition BJP was a ‘divided house’ on indirect elections of Mayor and Chairpersons in urban bodies of the state and so its demonstration against the move on Wednesday was a total failure.

Congress’s state general secretary and chairman communication wing Shailesh Nitin Trivedi in a statement claimed that the amendment to be made in the Urban Bodies Act would be done legally and would not violate democratic rights of anyone.

Often it was seen that Mayor belonged to one particular political party while the majority of corporators from other, he pointed out.  In such a situation it becomes an awkward situation for the Mayor or a Chairperson even to pass any bill including the budget provisions, Trivedi said.

Chaos was thus witnessed in such a situation and the amendment will prevent rectify such faulty system as majority will now be with the Mayor and Chairperson, he added.

He further ruled out any possibility of horse trading of corporators in the new system as had been feared by the BJP.
