Bijapur cut off from rest of State due to torrential rain

Published on:

For the second time in a month on Saturday the southern town of Chhattisgarh Bijapur was cut off from the rest of the State as the lone National Highway connecting it with divisional headquarters Jagdalpur was blocked with floodwaters flowing 4 feet above the bridge on Mingachal river.

According to sources, due to incessant rains lashing the southern part of Chhattisgarh specially Bijapur for the last two days most of the rivers and rivulets flowing in the area are in spate. While the level of water rose ominously in Ganeshbahar and Bangapal rivers, water of Gilgichcha, Rudraram, Vaspulbagu, Cherpally  and a couple of other rivulets flowed over Bijapur-Bhopalpatnam road affecting the traffic badly.

While on both sides of Mingachal river long queues of vehicles were seen waiting for the second day to cross the bridge if the water level recedes, plying of buses too remained suspended on Gangalur, Cherpal, Farsegarh, Kutru, Bedre, Awapalli, Usur, Ilmidi, Basaguda and other routes due to inundation increasing the woes of commuters. Due to the continuous rains while fields are under deep waters and standing crops have been submerged, water also entered low lying residential areas turning a number of villages in to islands. Due to the continuous rain, normal life as well as trade activities have also come to a stand still.
