Completing seven years of its establishment, the Bastar University is yet to fulfil the norms of University Grant Commission (UGC) to get its recognition.
In the absence of UGC recognition, no fund was released for the university in these years. It has now started affecting many of the important works proposed to expand facilities for the students and improving quality of the education in the varsity. Thus far, the varsity has managed to fulfil only two formalities under section 12B to get UGC recognition.
“As we are in process of fulfilling all the formalities under 12B for UGC recognition, many works of academic and administrative development could not be initiated due to lack of funds” said the Bastar University Registrar, Indu Anant. As per the norms set by UGC, the varsity should permanently appoint 5 professors, 15 lecturers and 10 assistant lecturer to get grants for carrying out academic and administrative works from next academic session.
The educational institutions, which qualify for UGC grant, get funds for developing infrastructure and scholarship for their students. As Bastar University is yet to qualify for the grant, construction work of its new building is at a standstill.
Bastar University Vice-Chancellor, NDR Chandra said “We have many times invited applications for filling the vacant posts but the eligible candidates are showing very less interest. The Members in Parliament (MPs) should demand amendments in UGC Act 1966 to simplify the rules of providing grants to the education institutions.”
