Bastar sees 20% fall in malaria cases

Malaria cases have shown a 20 percent fall in Chhattisgarh's sprawling Bastar region, where the mosquito-borne disease becomes a pest every monsoon.

Non-availability of healthcare centres in remote areas proves fatal and thousands of tribals come in the grip of malaria.

Now, because of the malaria elimination drive of the Chhattisgarh Government, Bastar has seen a whopping 20 percent decrease in positive cases in 2021 as compared to 2020.

A four-phase anti-malaria campaign was run in the region in which the positivity rate in the first phase was 2.1 percent, 1.26 percent in the second, 0.90 percent in the third and 0.99 percent now, an official statement said on Thursday.

Awareness programmes were run which included street plays. Cleanliness drives were launched particularly in areas where there was accumulated water.

The Health Department teams crossed rivers and rivulets as well as hillocks to reach some of the affected areas located in remote zones.
