Bankers on strike today

Published on:

Employees of public and private sector banks will launch a one-day strike across Chhatisgarh on Wednesday to press their various demands including hike in salary and allowances and against banking reforms.

The hunger strike would be launched as parts of nationwide protest called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), the association here said on Tuesday.  The bankers will also stage a demonstration near the Jaistambh Chowk in Raipur.

Bank union leaders said a delegation of UFBU met the bank managements at New Delhi and apprised them about the difficulties the bankers were facing. They demanded a hike in salary and allowances. Although the management promised a five per cent allowances hike, it declined to make any commitment on salary hike.

The Union rejected the offer made by the banking management and announced to launch the strike as per schedule. Describing the banking reforms move as anti-people, the UFBC said it is not only bound to hit the common people but also the resources of the country.

They also said more and more foreign banks are encouraged to open their offices in India and this may pave the way for takeover of the established private banks in the country.

The bankers will assemble at GE road at Raipur at 10.30 am and will proceed toward the Jaistambh Chowk in a rally. The bankers will also launch similar protests elsewhere in the State.
