Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Friday appealed to farmers’ to use vermi and super compost in their fields, saying it will go a long way in creating a healthy and clean environment.
In a message to the farmers, Baghel said that day by day the input cost of agriculture is increasing with utilization of chemical fertilizers, states an official communication.
The overall benefit is less than the cost. The indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is reducing the soil's fertility. Additionally, toxicity is increasing in farm produce, affecting the health of people and environment, he said. Baghel said vermi compost helps to prevent soil erosion, improves water holding capacity and prevents loss of nutrients from soil. The nutritional quality of food grains, fruits and vegetables are retained. Organic products get good prices in the market. To resolve these problems, organic farming is being promoted by the state. Under Godhan Nyay Yojana, cow dung is procured at Rs 2 per kg and women self-help groups convert them to vermi-compost and super compost, The rate of vermi-compost is Rs 10 per kg and super-compost is Rs 6 per kg.
