Following the alert sounded by central intelligence agencies over apprehension of another jail break in Maoist infested States, the security of jails have been heightened in Chhattisgarh.
The Superintendent of Police Jagdalpur on Wednesday evening inspected the Central Jail Jagdalpur and also performed a security drill, sources informed. Director General of Police Ramniwas talking with The Pioneer however expressed different view. According to DGP the possibility of any such eventuality is less and claimed that state police was able to deal with the situation ‘if any’. To the query about inputs from central intelligence agency he said “I will have to check once about the alert.”
It may be remained that in December 2007, 299 inmates, including 110 Naxals, had fled from the Dantewada, one of the worst insurgency hit district of Chhattisgarh. Dantewada jail break was the biggest jail break in history of state. Earlier in November 2005, about 1,000 Maoists and their supporters attacked Jehanabad jail in Bihar and released a large number of Naxal prisoners.
Meanwhile when contacted Director General Jail Girdhari Nayak he said, following media reports over possibility of Naxal attack on jail, the security of jails across state has been heightened. Replying overt the inputs from central intelligence agencies, the DG Jail said “I cannot confirm it as state police receives such information which then shares with us.”
Further sources in the police department informed that a security rehearsal and surprise inspection was performed at Central Jail Jagdalpur by district SP Ajay Yadav, ASP RS Salam and his team.
