Amit Jogi tears into Govt over leftist insurgency

Congress legislator Amit Jogi  (in pic) on Monday took the BJP Government in Chhattisgarh head-on in the State Assembly over the issue of rising Maoist insurgency in the State while stating that the arms being allegedly supplied to the left Wing ultras by their contacts are not being smuggled from China but were being manufactured within the State.

Speaking during the adjournment motion on the issue of Maoist insurgency on a demand raised by Congress members, the first-timer MlA Jogi said that Chhattisgarh had emerged as the biggest ‘weapons and ammunition

centre’ for the Maoists.

He said PM Manmohan Singh had thrice said that the left wing extremism (lWE) was the single biggest internal security threat to the country. “Insurgency in Chhattisgarh has assumed large dimensions,” Jogi said, while stating that “the NMDC plant in Bastar’s Dantewada district had been attacked by the insurgents at least 25 times.”

He said that the statistics on lWE tabled in the lok Sabha between 2007 to 2013 had revealed that in 3,298 days, 34.1 per cent of the Maoist violence took place only in Chhattisgarh. Jogi said that 3,285 people died due to Maoist violence in the country in which 32.23 per cent of the people died in Chhattisgarh.

A total of 865 members of the security forces died in the country fighting Maoists in the country between 2009 to 2012 in which 485 died in Chhattisagrh only, which is 56.65 per cent of the overall casualty from Maoist violence in the country, he said.

“It is surprising that Chhattisgarh’s Home Minister says that Naxal activities have declined consistently during the past two years in the State,” Jogi remarked.  Earlier during the adjournment motion, BJP member and Home Minister Ramsevak Paikra had stated that the intelligence network in the State had been strengthened in Chhattisgarh.

“leaders from both the political parties have lost their leaders in Maoist violence and we have to keep this problem above politics,” the Home Minister said.
