In what could be called successful implementation of a well thought-out plan for dealing with tonnes of garbage produced by the city daily, two tonnes of re-cyclable plastic waste was sold for `2.11 lakh by Ambikapur Municipal Corporation (AMC) to a businessman, officials informed on Sunday.
The scheme was launched by AMC which is the brain child of Surguja District Collector Ritu Sain.
So far, a total of 90.06 tonnes of recyclable waste has been collected by AMC.
Meanwhile on Sunday, a truck loaded with recyclable plastic waste was sold to Ambikapur based businessman Kashinath Saha. The occasion was marked with presence of officers from district administration, AMC, public representatives and others.
According to the officials, Ambikapur is the first urban body which is disposing off garbage through separate solid and liquid waste management.
Notably, the Solid and liquid Resource Management (SlRM) Center was inaugurated on April 14 this year at Kenabandha ward of the city. The waste collected from different houses is separated at SlRM Center and the recycled waste is then sold out.
leader of Congress legislative Party (ClP) TS Singhdeo who was present at the flagging off ceremony termed the waste management process every effective.
“Earlier people had different kinds of apprehensions about this project but now the project has successfully passed its first step,” he said.
District Collector Ritu Sain said that the main aim of this waste management practice is to clean the city. The waste that we are recycling today would have been found decaying in duping yard or drains if not recycled. But now it has become a source of income and is also ensuring sanitation, she added.
According to AMC Commissioner Dr lK Singroul currently, 17 SlRM centers are being operated in Municipal Corporation area. So far 90.06 tonnes of recycled wastes has already been stored and very soon is would be sold. Since June 2015, `4.12 lakh have also been collected as user charge, he mentioned.
