The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has approved the setting up of a centre for research on critical respiratory diseases at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here. It will be one of 20 centres being set up in the country.

Dr Ajoy Kumar Behera, appointed as Principal Investigator of the centre, told the media on Monday that this is a five-year project.

It will help in developing medical facilities by collecting detailed data regarding diseases affecting the respiratory system. The Centres have been named as ICMR Network of Pulmonary Fibrosis.

He added that after Covid-19 across the country, there has been a spurt in the number of patients with respiratory system especially lung diseases.

The Pulmonary Department of AIIMS reports 250 patients daily. It would help play an important role in collecting data of post Covid-19 patients and extending them treatment.

Welcoming the decision, AIIMS Director Prof. (Dr.) Nitin M. Nagarkar said the centre will be developed as a Centre of Excellence.
