Chhattisgarh has a shortage of about 75,000 quintals of soya bean seeds despite attempt by the authorities to stock the seeds as per the demand placed by the State Agriculture Department, official sources said on Monday.
The State Government is now mulling to write to the Central Government so that it gets more seeds to meet the requirement of farmers. Farmers grow soybean in Rajnandgaon, Kawardah, Bemetara, Durg and some other districts of the State. Agriculture Department officials said the State has targetted to grow soya bean in 60,000 hectares area.
last year, the area under soybean cultivation was set at 57,000 hectares. With the rising demand, the officials have increased the target area by 3,000 hectares. On one hand, the farmers do not have adequate seeds, those who have got the seeds they are unable to decide which variety would be suitable for them. They are likely to suffer losses if do not get the right type of seeds soon.
