4 firms, officials face action over inferior soyabean seeds supply

The State Government has taken action against four companies and many officials over the supply of sub standard Soyabean seeds to the farmers in Nandgaon district, Agriculture Minister Brijmohan Agrawal informed in the State Assembly on Thursday.

Replying to a question by Congress member Girvar Janghel during the Question Hour, the Minister said that farmers had registered at the Seed Processing Centre at Shivpuri to avail Soyabean seeds.

He said the poor quality seeds were provided to the farmers by the Centre at Shivpuri.

While action has been taken against the concerned companies and officials, money has been refunded to the affected farmers, said Agrawal, adding, there was a shortage of good soybean seeds across the country right now.

A total of 449 farmers had registered in the year 2012-13 and 2013-14. The Central Government had provided seeds to 195 of them.

The seeds were of poor standard as 6450 quintals of the seeds had poor germination, he said.

The Minister also said that efforts were on to meet the requirement as there was a shortage of soybean seeds across the country.

Of the 31,000 quintals of Soyabean seeds supplied to the farmers, 21,000 quintals were found to be of poor quality, he said.
