The Income Tax Department has slapped notices on around 300 people in Chhattisgarh who have shown income of more than Rs 10 lakh through agricultural activities in a year, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (CCIT) KC Ghumaria said here on Friday.

“The Department has a list people who have shown bogus incomes through agriculture and notices have been served to them,” the CCIT said while adding that their replies are being scrutinised.

He was addressing a Press conference regarding the Income Declaration Scheme (IDS).

“The department had noticed that there were persons who do not own agricultural land but had shown income through agriculture or they had shown disproportionate income from a small land", Ghumaria said .

The CCIT, while speaking about the Income Declaration Scheme (IDS) said that the same will end on midnight of September 30, 2016 and people who have not been able to declare their income can do so before the stipulated time.

He assured that the names of the persons and amounts being declared under the scheme will be kept confidential.

"Taxes should not be considered as penalty but contribution towards nation's development," he added.

The Chief Commissioner revealed that in five group surveys carried out in the current financial year starting from April 2016, Rs 240 crore were surrendered.

"This shows the amount of black money in the State," he said.

He informed that the Department had also exposed a racket of rice millers wherein bogus bills of Rs 900 crore were filed. Notices have been served to them and most of them are coming forward in the IDS scheme, he said.

According to him, the Department has received information about various property declarations, share capital, share premium, unsecured loan or unaccounted money brought in Chhattisgarh from other states and the persons who indulged in such activities are under Department scanner.

"I would like to suggest such people that they should come and clear their records before September 30 this year or be ready to face the music", he said.

We have also sought details of land transactions made in Naya Raipur and we feel there are several cases of taxable capital gains. However, we are cautiously examining those cases as in some cases farmers are involved, he said.

Businessmen who have sold land to NRDA should file their returns. likewise, we have asked for land dealings done in Kamal Vihar Part 1 and 2, he added.
