During the past four months, as many as 21 farmers have committed suicide in Chhattisgarh, claimed State Congress on Thursday.
Attacking the ruling BJP Government in the State, Spokesperson of Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CGPCC) Ghanshyam Raju Tiwari said that State Govern-ment is responsible for deaths of farmers in Chhattisgarh.
“A tribal farmer Jagmohan Dhruv (45) resident of Matka village in Bemetara district committed suicide by hanging from a tree. He owned one acre of farm land,” Tiwari claimed.
The ruling BJP Government has cheated farmers in Chhattisgarh who are facing drought situation. The farmers in the State are neither getting compensation for the crop nor the government has made any announcement for freeing them from debt, he charged.
Tiwari added that State Government has also failed in providing alternate livelihood to the farmers in Chhattisgarh.
According to him, the State Government’s claim of providing 9,000 units of power against requirement of 7,500 units is bogus as 80 per cent of farmers in the State do not have pump connections.
Speaking about subsidy on diesel, he said the State Government had announced doling out subsidy on diesel worth `3 crore.
The subsidy would be distributed among 1.90 lakh farmers in Chhattisgarh, which makes it `158 for every farmer.
However, in September this year, the State Cabinet had decided of extending subsidy of `2,000 to every farmer, Tiwari said.
