Jamwant' to check bear menace

The ‘Jamwant’ scheme will be started in 5 to 6 places — including Kota to check menace of bears in these areas, Chief Minister Raman Singh announced in the State Assembly on Monday.

The funds to the tune of Rs 5 crore would be provided for this from CAMPA fund. In a reply to Congress member Renu Jogi during the Question Hour, Singh said that the ‘Jamwant’ scheme to control bears was not operational in the State.

Jogi raised the issue of compensation provided to the families of the dead in bear attack or sustained injuries in the attack and asked if fruit bearing trees will be planted in areas frequented by bears, under the scheme.

Singh in his reply said that the State Government has increased the compensation in cases of attack by wild animals. The compensation for death in attack by wild animals has been increased from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh,  while compensation for the injured it had been increased from Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000.

The Chief Minister said that ‘Jamwant’ scheme was an important scheme and there were more than half a dozen places in the State where bears were in good numbers.

Fruit bearing trees will be planted in these areas and ponds will be preserved with funds from CAMPA to contain bears which enter the human habitations and attack people.  The scheme will be implemented in five to six more places except Kota.
