Sarabjit autopsy nails Pak lies

In a damning indictment of the Pakistani authorities, a team of doctors from the Government Medical College, Amritsar, who conducted the second autopsy on Sarabjit, said that he was attacked with the intention to kill him. The post-mortem report said that Sarabjit had been attacked with heavy blunt objects and had "massive head injuries". Earlier the Pakistan Government had claimed that Sarabjit was injured in a "scuffle" with two fellow prisoners, and it was not a pre-meditated attack.

"The main motive was to kill the person. The face of the skull was completely smashed. Rather it was in two pieces. He died from massive head injuries," said Gurjit Singh Mann, head of a medical panel of the Amritsar Medical College.

Dr GS Rai, head of forensic medicine, said that severe head injuries were found on the scalp and five ribs were found badly broken. The doctors found multiple fractures traced on head, jaw, deep injuries on the back of head and ears, visible swelling on scalp due to fractures on skull which were inflicted by blunt object. "All this indicated that this was done by several persons with a common intention to kill," said a doctor in the team.

"A single man cannot harm a healthy person like Sarabjit the way he received injuries...There were certainly more persons who attacked him," one of the doctors said, adding that the injuries were 6-7 days old. They indicated that Sarabjit could have been brain dead after the brutal attack on him and he was kept on the ventilator just for diplomatic reasons.

Vital organs including heart, stomach, kidneys, Gallbladder were found missing from Sarabjit's body. "Some parts, which are vital for conducting autopsy, were missing," a doctor said, adding that they have sought the report of the first post-mortem conducted at lahore to arrive at a clear conclusion on the circumstances leading to Sarabjit's death.

Among other organs, which were missing included the heart, gall bladder and kidneys, besides five ribs were fractured.

On Thursday night, doctors from Amritsar Medical College conducted a post-mortem examination on the body at Patti, 40 km from Amritsar. The first autopsy was conducted by a Pakistani medical board in lahore before Sarabjit's body was handed over to India. The final cause of death would be ascertained after receiving the Viscera test report. Viscera report and details of the autopsy from Pakistan is also awaited. Sarabjit's family gave its go ahead for the second post-mortem examination after his body arrived in India Thursday evening. The family said they had no trust on the findings of the post-mortem examination done by the Pakistani medical board.

Soon after the funeral, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said that the country must know the exact cause of Sarabjit's death. "The Union government must build up international pressure to get the causes of his martyrdom investigated by an impartial International agency," he said. Realising the anger amongst the people, Badal exhorted the people to remain calm in this hour of grief and crisis.
