A 17-year-old girl was burnt alive by a woman over a minor dispute in village Jarondha coming under Khadgaon police station limits of Koriya district.

The victim succumbed to injuries on Saturday evening, police said.

Police has registered the offence against the woman and is reported to be absconding after the incident.

As per information received, the deceased minor girl had been residing with her paternal grandfather Bajrang Singh and grandmother in village Jarondha.

On January 4, the girl had spotted stray cattle grazing in the field on which she intimated her grandfather and tried to shoo away the cattle.

Her neighbour Hiramaniya Bai, reached the spot and picked up a fight over the issue.

The fight over cattle grazing reached Panchayat. The Panchayat Panch while hearing both sides, found the woman guilty who was then ordered to pay the compensation for the crop loss.

This led to further enmity of woman with the minor girl and her grandparents. On incident day on January 8, when Bajrang had gone to sell paddy and grandmother was also away , the accused woman entered the girl’s residence. As the girl was unwell, she was sleeping in the room near the kitchen.

Taking  advantage of absence of grandparents, the woman poured kerosene over the girl and set her on fire. The villagers later rushed the girl to Primary Health Centre, Khadgaon from where she was then referred to district hospital.

The girl later succumbed to the burn injuries. Koriya police conducted post-mortem and registered offence against the woman after a complaint was lodged by Bajrang Singh under Section 307 and 452 of IPC.
