After striking Abujhmad, diarrhoea has now spread its tentacles in Bijapur where under Bhairamgarh block, 14 people fell prey to the deadly disease within a week while a large number of them are suffering, reports reaching district headquarters said.

According to health department officials, a team of doctors has reached the affected area and treatment of the affected has begun. Now, the situation is under control, they claimed.

Sources said, Takilor, Uthala and adjoining villages under the Bhairamgarh block of Bijapur district are facing outbreak in diarrhoea, but due to the swollen Indrawati River, villagers are not able to reach hospitals resulting in over a dozen deaths while many more are suffering from this disease. According to sources, besides

diarrhoea, people are also suffering from cough-cold and fever and due poor connectivity to district headquarters, they are forced to take treatment at village level itself due to which they are not getting much relief.

Bijapur Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Devendra Nag said: “Just after getting the news of so many deaths from diarrhoea, a team of doctors left for the area and organised health camp in the affected villages for three days to treat the patients. Necessary medicines and other useful tips have been given to the villagers and now the situation is under control. The area is cut up by the swollen Indrawati River, preventing people to reach hospital due to which the contagious water-borne disease spread in the area.”

Meanwhile, Collector of Bijapur Mohammad Abdul Kaiser said that due to diarrhoea only six people died in Takilor and nearby villages whereas four people died of food poisoning and another four fell to normal diseases. Since all the deaths occurred in a week amid reports of diarrhoea outbreak in those areas therefore all the deaths are assigned to it. Presently, the situation is under control and team of civil surgeons is camping there. Unless the team returns, nothing more can be said about it. Due to massive and continuous rains the disease struck the area, he added.

Meanwhile, in-charge of contagious diseases control cell Health Department Dr SM MMurthy said that report of diarrhoea outbreak in some villages of Bhairamgarh Block has been received and district health officials have been sent to the affected area. If the need arises, team of doctors will also be sent from divisional headquarters. In view of the rainy season the department has made arrangements for treatment and storage of medicines in the area. The situation is presently under control, Murthy added.

Notably, just a few days back, 20 tribals had died of diarrhoea in Handawada and Dunga village panchayats in Orchha block (Abujhmad) of Narayanpur area, while over two dozen of them were suffering from the deadly disease and situation was brought under control only when the health department reached the village and started treatment.
