101 surgeries in seven hours; Govt orders probe

The Chhattisgarh government has ordered a probe into irregularities at a sterilization camp in Surguja district where a government surgeon did tubectomies on 101 women in seven hours, an officer said on Saturday.

The camp was held on August 27 at the Narmadapur community health centre in Mainpat block.

A section of the media reported irregularities following which the department issued show-cause notices to the surgeon and a health officer.

Now, a probe has been ordered based on which further action will be taken, said Dr Alok Shukla, Principal Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department.

A total of 101 surgeries were performed in the camp. The women were said to be healthy. But as per official guidelines, a surgeon can perform a maximum of 30 surgeries in a day. Hence an enquiry has been ordered to ascertain why the guidelines were violated, Shukla said.

The surgeon, Dr Jibnus Ekka, claimed a large number of women turned up for the procedure and urged him to perform the operation, saying they had come from distant villages and cannot travel frequently.

Earlier, Surguja Chief Medical and Health Officer P.S. Sisodiya on August 29 issued a show-cause notice to Dr Ekka and Block Medical Officer Dr R.S. Singh.
