‘National security has become a political football’

n“It is very unfortunate that today national security has become a political football”, stated leading national security expert C Uday Bhaskar.

He was speaking at the Intellectual Meet organized by Group of Thinkers (GoT) here on Saturday.

“National security is above political affiliation and party objective and it should be viewed in a non-partisan and holistic manner,” Bhaskar opined.

According to Bhaskar, who has retired as a Commodore of the Indian Navy, security has to be relevant to the society.

“Today internal security and external security are overlapping,” he opined.

Referring to the current security challenges before India, he said in the past 25-years nation has been dealing with a proxy war. So, the internal security factors are dictating the external security. Internal security is indivisible, linked with external security, he argued.

He expressed the need to have a debate on how every state could move ahead with their respective security policies within the national framework.

He was of the view that national security should receive seriousness it deserves.

Bhaskar expressed the need for sharing best practices happening in states from security point of view. He also laid emphasis on better coordination between Center and the states.

“We hope that the national security compulsion is kept above politics and states can create capacities across the board, whether it is police, commando or civilian officers we should approach it with professional integrity,” he said.

“Hopefully if Chhattisgarh shows the way then it could be emulated by other states as the nature of this challenge is pan India,” he observed.
