George Martin, the music producer credited for the success of The Beatles has died aged 90.

The news first emerged in a tweet from ex-Beatle Ringo Starr and later confirmed by Universal Music Group and by Martin's management.

Referred to as the "Fifth Beatle", Martin played a huge role in making the British band popular across the globe.

Adam Sharp, who represented both Martin and his son Giles, said in a statement: "We can confirm that Sir George Martin passed away peacefully at home yesterday evening, Tuesday 8 March. The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers and messages of support.

"In a career that spanned seven decades he was recognized globally as one of music's most creative talents and a gentleman to the end. The family ask that their privacy be respected at this time."

Martin signed The Beatles in 1962 to his Parlophone label after hearing a demo tape and there was no looking back for the group, which had been turned down by several record labels including Decca. Martin invited them for an audience at Abbey Road studios in June 1962.

Martin occasionally played piano on the Beatles' records and also worked with artists including Gerry and the Pacemakers, Shirley Bassey and Cilla Black.

In his lifetime, he won multiple Grammy awards and an Oscar for the score to "A Hard Day's Night". Martin received the knighthood in 1996 and in 1999 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Paying tribute to Martin, British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted, "Sir George Martin was a giant of music - working with the Fab Four to create the world's most enduring pop music."

In a statement, former Beatle, Paul McCartney said, "I have so many wonderful memories of this great man that will be with me forever. He was a true gentleman and like a second father to me.

"He guided the career of The Beatles with such skill and good humour that he became a true friend to me and my family. If anyone earned the title of the Fifth Beatle it was George."

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr wrote on Twitter, "God bless George Martin peace and love to Judy and his family... Thank you for all your love and kindness George peace and love."

Sean Ono lennon, son of John and Yoko, posted an Instagram picture of Martin with the caption: "RIP George Martin. I'm so gutted I don't have many words. Thinking of Judy and Giles and family. love Always, Sean."
