Published on:

Dieticians have come to the conclusion that having combinations like palak-paneer or, for that matter, bacon and eggs are not good for health. SHAlINI SAKSENA speaks to a newage nutritionist to tell you more about many such dishes that are popular but unhealthy

Foods are actually a chemical combination and so each food has different properties hence it can help you or can create problem in your body so before joining the two combinations you should have a look at the combination as one should not hinder in the digestion.

To maintain a healthy routine you must maintain a habit to eat some foods separately as mixing can make you sick even to such extent that it can poison your body. It is good to have a dietitians and nutritionist suggestion.

Wrong food combinations can be the reason for the production of toxins in the body which can signal you in the form of stomach pain, indigestion, bloating, heartburn, fatigue and constipation and possibly lead to chronic illness.

In order to avoid such circumstances it is good to know some combinations that hinder your digestion and must be avoided. Better eat those separately at different time frame. Here are the few combinations which must not be eaten at same time.

FRUIT AFTER A MEAl

Eating fruits is healthy, one is told. But when you eat it, the most important thing to keep in mind is timing. If you are eating a meal and a fruit together or one after another without having time gap then you are disturbing your digestion.

DOCTOR SAYS: Fruits have simple sugar so they don't take time in digestion while foods rich in carbohydrate, fats and protein take longer time and if you are taking both at a time then they will mix and stay together for longer time and naturally fruit’s sugar will stay their longer and ferment and cause health problem.

BEANS AND CHEESE

This is a favourite combination that one finds while eating Mexican food or when eats an English breakfast — baked beans and cheese. But these two really play havoc with your system.

DOCTOR SAYS: In order to digest the two heavy foods combination like beans and cheese your digestion system needs more strength than usual and hence takes longer time in digestion and as a result it is normal that you have gas and bloating. Avoid this combination or a similar one if you have weaker digestion or you are on detox diet plan.

MElON AND PROSCIUTTO

Melons of all kind — watermelon and melon — are very good for digestion as they are mostly made up of water and gets digested flashed out of the system fast, but believe it or not they should be eaten separately and mixed with either dairy products or meat.

DOCTOR SAYS: If you are eating melon with cured ham, dairy product or meat then you are combining two different digestible substances at the time and hence it is going to create a problem for you. Melons will get digested but remain in the system along with prosciutto and so you can have pain in belly and flatulence.                        — Seharawat

BANANA WITH MIlK

When we talk about banana and milk certainly its smoothie comes in the mind and it is very popular and very well-known smoothie. Generally people take it with the view to gain weight but this combination is not good.

DOCTOR SAYS: It is like joining sour fruit with milk. Banana becomes sour as it breaks down. Its effect is like putting lemon into the milk. As we know milk property is cooling however bananas are heating so this combination takes a lot of struggle in digestion and it creates toxins in the digestive system and it can have bad results such as congestion, colds, coughs, allergies, hives, and rashes. If you still want to drink this smoothie then be sure that banana is fully ripe and while making it add cardamom and nutmeg to have better digestion.

YOGURT WITH FRUIT

Again, this is a popular combination for those who are rushed for work in the morning and having yogurt with fruit is the easiest thing to grab and eat on the go.  None can resist the temptation of eating this but study says it is not good to mix sour fruits with milk as this combination can do a lot more damage than good.

DOCTOR SAYS: There is a simple way to lower the problem and making it more digestible friendly by serving it at room temperature and mix it with little honey, cinnamon and raisins.

TOMATO AND CHEESE PASTA SAUCE

Yes, you read that right. This most widely eaten food combo needs to be avoided at all cost even though it is found in almost all menus across the world.

DOCTOR SAYS: It is important to note that while tomatoes are lovely but they are acidic and pasta is starchy and full of carbohydrates. This combination makes your digestion difficult and takes longer period and more energy than normal so you will feel fatigue after meal. It is better to avoid and eat separately with time gap.
