A new lease of life

The Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals granted a new lease of life to a 55-year-old accountant whose heart had ruptured — a fatal complication that rarely occurs, only in 1-2% of the patients of a cardiac arrest. When Vinod Kumar fainted in his office, he was rushed to Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. The doctors found that Kumar’s heart had sustained a wound causing blood loss and compression over the heart.

Dr Mukesh Goel, senior consultant, Cardio Thoracic & Vascular surgeon, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals said: “The echocardiography revealed that thick fluid had collected around his heart, compressing it and an emergency operation was planned. When the pericardium was opened, instead of thick pus-like material, blood clots gushed out. It was deduced that there was wound in the heart.”

Dr Goel said that the incident highlights important points, “Heart attack can manifest in multiple ways. Heart attack and cardiac diseases can be ruled out by ECG and blood test. It is essential one visit a hospital well equipped to handle the cardiac emergency.”

Dr Mahesh Chandra Garg, senior consultant, Cardiology,  Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals  said: “He had no history of any cardiac ailment and the ECG ruled out the heart attack as the cause of his condition. Since his blood pressure kept falling, high doses of medication were required to stabilise him."

Ashok Bajpai, MD, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals said: “Our cardiac team is among the country's finest. This is truly a landmark surgery that has given Kumar a new lease of life. At Apollo, we don't just treat heart disease, we reverse it.”
