Most people will tell you that there is no cure for a cold but there are a few things that one can do to ensure you feel better and take care of that tickle in the throat, says Roshani Devi

There are many of us who still rely on home remedies to cure a simple cold. One of the simplest things to do is drink ginger (adrak) tea. The tea will help dry running nose and expel phlegm from the respiratory tract. Ginger is known to soothe common cold and help a person to recover faster.

  • Believe it or not, drinking lukewarm water helps. I remember as children, my mother would make us drink it, it reduces inflammation in the throat and helps to replenish fluids.
  • Haldi (turmeric) and doodh (milk) was another favourite during our time. Turmeric mixed in warm milk fights against cold and cough. Drinking a glass before sleeping helps in faster recovery.
  • Drinking honey in tea with lemon can also ease throat pain. Giving children 10 gram of honey at bedtime reduced the severity of cough symptoms.
  • Gargling with salt water helps too. It also decreases the severity of cold symptoms.
  • The good old baking soda does the trick too. Take half a teaspoon and mix in a glass of cool water and drink — one day 1 — six times at two-hour interval. Day 2 — four time at equal intervals. Day 3 — twice in a day. Day 4 — once — in the morning every day until cold is gone.
