Stomach viral is on its way to Delhi with many coming down with tummy discomfort for no apparent reason. But there’s home to help you out, says ROSHANI DEVI

Doctors call it viral gastroenteritis but we commoners know it as stomach flu. The bad news is that this contagious disease boasts of a cocktail of viruses and is horribly unpleasant. low-grade fever, diahorrea and vomiting are common symptoms. Not much on the medicines front here so just rest it out at home with simple dos:

  • You may not feel like eating or drinking but do not be a difficult patient. Keep your body well hydrated as it is important to avoid dehydration. Clear soda, clear soups and caffeine-free drinks are good to go as slow sips. Definitely a good idea to avoid coffee and black tea as they are high in caffeine and inflame the intestines.
  • Yes, we know that your appetite is destroyed but do not give up on eating. Have soups and small meals at small intervals. Tomatoes may not be a good idea.
  • It is best to rest out this ailment. Allow the immune system to work and repair cells by giving your body an afternoon nap and a good night's sleep. Ginger, lemon and mint concoction, largely anti-inflammatory, settles the insides.
  • To make ginger tea: Add a tsp of powdered ginger or ½ tsp of fresh ginger root to 1 cup of water. Boil for 5 minutes and let it rest for 10 minutes and then strain the tea if using fresh ginger root. Drink 2-3 times daily to get relief
  • Acupressure works too but you need to know the right way: Measure three finger-widths down from the bottom of the palm and apply pressure with your thumb to the soft part between two tendons. Massage for a couple of minutes.
