My grandson’s concerns about the return season of chikengunya left me thinking about joint pain therapies at home. Here are a few. Do try out, says ROSHANI DEVI
Methi is a wonder seed for many ailments and works wonders on joint pain, especially when it comes to arthritis. It does not cure the ailment as such, but goes a long way in tackling the pain. It works well due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. You could consume it in many ways, including a teaspoon of powdered seeds with lukewarm water in the morning. Or, soak the same amount of seeds in water overnight and eat them the next morning, drink the water.
Then there is turmeric which has been the magic ploy for Ayurveda. It contains curcumin which is an anti-inflammatory antioxidant. Some even say that haldi is as effective on pain as ibuprofen, especially for pain relief in the knee. Mix haldi and honey in a teaspoon, pour it into your warm glass of milk and have it daily in the morning. For external application mix pure haldi in sugar and limestone (choona) and apply it overnight on your knee. As a note of caution, haldi is not good for gallbladder problems and for people on blood thinners.
Apple Cider Vinegar has no such issues, and it cuts the pain by throwing out toxins in the joints and tissues. Besides having an alkalising effect, it is also high on magnesium, calcium, potassium and phosphorus. Mix three teaspoons with honey in a cup of warm water and sip the concoction through the day, preferably before meals.
