After my husband who had no symptoms of a heart problem suddenly started breathing heavy and had to go for urgent surgery, I delved into home remedies for reducing cholesterol. Here is what I found, says ROSHANI DEVI

Coriander seeds are a wonder drug not just for diabetics but also to cut down what we know as lDl or bad cholesterol and triglycerides which trigger cardiac issues, especially heart attacks. Just incorporate them in your daily diet and half the worry is over. Dry roast the seeds and grind them. Use one tsp everyday with water. Alternately, you can boil half a glass of water with one tsp coriander powder and drink it every morning.

For even better cholesterol management, top the seed intake with red onion & its juice which has properties that elevate good cholesterol (HDl) and reduce lDl. You could chop an onion, mix it in buttermilk and have it with a dash of black pepper powder. Not that a tsp of onion juice with honey once a day is any less helpful.

Amla juice is a must for all 30 plus people because it is preventive for very many diseases. It is known to be a natural hypolipidemic agent which scales down the lipid in the serum. The fruit also has antihyperlipidemic, anti-atherogenic and hypolipidemic effects which are very beneficial for a heart patient. Other than that, include orange juice in your diet, better still have it with the pulp. Anyway, 750 ml of pure orange juice daily can increase HDl cholesterol and decrease the lDl/HDl ratio in hypercholesterolemic patients.
