Down with acidityIJ Here’s what you can do for instant relief without running to the doctor, says ROSHANI DEVI
Believe it or not, laung (clove) was my mother’s answer to acidity! And as far as I can remember, it did work on me. People will tell you garam masala is like poison for acidity and acid reflux. But clove alleviates the discomfort, especially if you are having an acidity attack due to low levels of acid in your stomach. Chew two to three cloves thoroughly so that the juices are released into your system. For better result, mix equal number of cloves and cardamom to tackle the acid problem. Yes, you may have heard of cloves being a pain reliever when it comes to toothache but it has other properties too, like giving you a break from bad breath.
If clove is not your thing, you could also try basil leaves. They cool down your stomach if had in a bunch and chewed thoroughly. Ajwain (carom) seeds are another magic potion and they go well for indigestion, gastric issues and stomach ache too. Just crush a spoonful in your palm, with your thumb, add some kala namak and hing to it and gulp it down with water. The relief comes with burps, taking just 15 minutes to settle down.
There’s chhas (buttermilk) too which has wonderful properties to end the acidity. Have it as a light liquid, preferably cool, and with some roasted and crushed methi seeds.
Roasted and crushed cumin in water is a long-term solution for acidity. Have it with every meal, preferably before going to the dining table.
